Bad Mummy - Smart about the take-away bags. I hadn't thought of that. I haven't heard of Book Crossings before. Sounds great. Thanks!

Bring your own take-away containers into the restaurant so that you can reject the one-time-use styrofoam containers if you need a doggy-bag.

I use re-usable dryer sheets for my laundry and wash most of the stuff in cold water.

You could join Book Crossings so that you can pass on books you've finished reading along the way. And if you're looking for something to read, stop at a thrift store instead of buying new.

Also, if you are eating out and there are single-use packets, like creamers, ketchup, jam, sugar, ask the staff whether they throw them out once they've been on your table. Most places do (health concerns), so take them with you.

Great ideas, Chris! I think we'll do both - bring our own soaps etc and collect the ones there for a shelter.

All those little soap & shampoo bottles they give at hotels can't be great for the environment. Get a travel container to keep soap in & bring your own shampoo. Maybe collect all the soap/shampoo and donate to homeless shelter instead.

Keeping the car in good repair, is best way to help the planet (reduce emissions & improve gas mileage). This includes tire pressure, which can change if you go through varying climates.

Good luck!

Not running the A/C doesn't help you conserve gas. Read this article on Edmunds.com for other tips that do: http://bit.ly/yqa89
